If you have a chair at home, or one belonging to a friend / relative, a favourite chair that has seen better days or you see a chair at an antiques fair or junk shop, and you wish to breathe life back into it, bring it along to the Upholstery Workshop and you will be shown how to create a piece of furniture which is not factory produced but fashioned by you.
During the Workshop you will learn to:
• Strip off old coverings
• Use tools safely and correctly
• Be introduced to materials and fillings used in traditional upholstery
• Select and prepare fabrics for cutting
• Hand sewing
And most importantly:
• Create a chair/seat exactly how it should be, taking into account comfort and support using the traditional methods incorporating webbing, springs, hessian, flocking, calico and then the right fabric which will enhance the look of the chair.
For the first lesson please bring along the chair and any tools you may have. Initial supplies can be purchased from me, but the intention will be for you to source your own with the help of suppliers which I will tell you about during the first lesson.
A bit about Janet:
Having had an interest in fabrics and interiors for most of her adult life, Janet was lucky enough to channel those interests into an interior/furnishings/gift shop for five years. Janet has had formal training in Traditional Upholstery for three and a half years and having been taught most of the traditional upholstery techniques she has subsequently put her knowledge into re-upholstering special pieces for her home and projects for family and friends. Her home is now filled with chairs and is fast running out of space, so being able to pass on her knowledge to others, she thinks, is a good next step.
