This session:

Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a celebration during which the dead are honoured. It is not a sad time nor meant to be scary but instead a time of rejoicing and memories.

As part of the rejoicing, people dress up, put colourful decorations up, hold parades, sing and dance. One of the symbols used a lot in these celebrations are colourfully decorated skulls, using this as inspiration, we’ll create Mod Roc masks using a plastic mask to mold the Mod Roc (plaster impregnated gauze) on to. Once dry we’ll then paint colourful decorations on to the masks. These won’t be masks to wear but as something to decorate / hang / put up around your house.

Whilst Day of the Dead is not a version of Halloween, it is held on dates very close to Halloween, on November 1 and November 2 and now as more countries recognise and know about Day of the Dead people use their decorations to also celebrate Halloween too, so you could put your Mod Roc mask up as part of your Halloween decorations.

What to expect:
During Art Club we explore a range of topics using different materials including guauche and acrylic paint, pencil, collage and crayons, along with using various methods, both 2D and 3D and working in different sizes. Children will explore art using observation, imagination as well as taught techniques. Art Club aims to enrich learning and development as well as offering a creative fun and relaxing experience.

Parents + carers can choose to stay during the session but we are more than happy for children to be left with us.

You can see more details of previous sessions on our Art Club Facebook page.

Marianna and Emma take Art club alternate sessions, offering different styles and experiences.
