About The Workshop:

Birds and nature inspired work is very current and on trend within textile art.  Exploring the lifestyle of birds can be fascinating, a lot of us feed the birds, and have an emotional response to these lovely little creatures. Isn’t it amazing to be inspired by what is outside all our homes and that we can observe from every window.  This is an  exciting opportunity to develop a unique bird to display inside the house.

Birds can be formed by making a pattern, stuffing, and finally decorating with hand stitching; a relatively simply process. This is a great opportunity to develop creative ideas such as colour, texture, shape & form and involves very basic machine stitching and hand embroidery.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and the more experienced stitchers, in a friendly and supportive environment.

There will be lots of inspirational bird images available at the workshop (course)  although if you have a particular bird that comes to your garden how about using that for your chosen bird to make.

Materials:

Basic sewing kit to include :

Scissors,

Needles & Pins

Cotton threads & embroidery threads in your choice of colours.

Scraps of fabrics suitable for the bird of your choice.

A bit about Jan:

Jan has over 20 years of teaching experience at the Grimsby Art College, North Lindsey College in Scunthorpe and Community Learning in Cleethorpes also with several years as a Creative Arts  Curriculum manager. Finding it a joy and a pleasure to facilitate in the creative journey of so many learners over the years, Jan continues to deliver exciting and interesting textile workshops here at The Steel Rooms and at the Discovery Centre in Cleethorpes as well as delivering talks,  workshops and summer schools for Embroiderer’s Guilds around the Country.

Jan is also a textile artist in her own right,  exhibiting her work with great success across the years and most recently at The Discovery Centre in Cleethorpes. Working in constructed textiles, the motivation behind Jans work is to promote hand embroidery, never really feeling satisfied unless the surface is fully stitched. Although her work also involves machine embroidery, applique, and mixed media she feels working in textiles gives her flexibility; that she can create painterly effects with the added bonus of a tactile three-dimensional quality.

Jan has been awarded the ‘Winner of the Beryl Dean National Teaching Award 2015’ and ‘2014/15  Winner of the City & Guilds Gold Medal of Excellence for teaching Creative Textiles’, highly esteemed accolades which are testament to Jans work and teaching with judges comments that “Jan  generously and tirelessly inspires and enhances the learning experience”. With Jans enthusiam to teach, learn new skills and share ideas we’re sure there’s plenty to learn and enjoy in her workshops.
