We had so much to write about Jan Dowson, we thought it best to give her a feature on our blog.
Having recently retired from ‘teaching’ roles has given Jan the time to establish herself as a textile artist again; her work is currently showing in our Case Gallery – our newly refurbished stairwell – in her solo exhibition Birds, Birds, Birds! Her works include textile panels framed and unframed, as well as 3d birds full of life and character. The pieces involve a variety of textile and mixed media techniques showing off Jan’s real flair and creative workings in textiles. Jans work is here on display and for sale until 28 April 2018.
You can also have go at creating your own textile pieces in one of Jans workshops running at Gallery Steel Rooms and The Steel Rooms, here’s a list of the current workshops with more being fleshed out as we type:
- Birds, Birds, Birds! A Full Day Textile Workshop with Jan Dowson on Saturday 31 March 10am – 4pm. Here’s pictures of the first date of this workshop which ran on Saturday 17 March – https://www.thesteelrooms.com/gallery/birds-birds-birds-full-day-textiles-workshop-with-jan-dowson-march-2018/
- 3d Bird Workshop Dates and times to be confirmed
- Exploit the Landscape a 6 week course running Wednesday 5 September up to and including 10 October
All of Jans workshops are open to complete beginners through to experienced stitchers. With a wealth of experience – over 20 years of teaching experience – she is generous with her time and sharing her knowledge of tried and tested ideas.
Jan has won several awards of significant merit which are a real testament to her approach as a tutor as well as personal achievements. These include the Beryl Dean National Teaching Award (2015), the Worshipful Company of Broderers Award (2014/15) and the City & Guilds Gold Medal of Excellence for Teaching Creative Textiles (2014/15) and for this achieving an additional prize for outstanding achievement which was given to her by The Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace.
